Match Report: North West Counties Play Off Semi Final.

Stockport Town 0- Bacup Borough 2

Following back to back wins against Ashton Town respectively, this followed with a 2-2 draw in Bacup’s final League game of the season against Daisy Hill and secured a fifth place finish, with this a place in the North West Counties League Division One Play Off Semi Final on Monday evening. Brent Peters took his Bacup side to face Stockport Town, to whom had secured home advantage by finishing in an higher League position, the fact that Stockport play on an artificial pitch could in some quarters to be seen has a disadvantage to their opponents, certainly on the night and the way Bacup did adapt themselves this was certainly not to be the case.

Bacup to whom were now playing their seventh game in sixteen days and without the services of their leading goal scorer Matthew Barlow, along with his injured strike partner Yves Zama started the game brightly and with this did open the scoring with only ten minutes on the clock, the goal came from Bacup winning a free kick some twenty five yards out in a wide area, Matthew Bryan delivered a quality cross to the far post area, from which Adrian Bellamy got his head too heading the ball back into the direction of the near post where the oncoming Mathew Dell forced the ball into the net, this was nothing short of what the visitors deserved from their positive impressive approach play.

Matthew Dell was unlucky not to have doubled his team’s lead following Kelvin Trippier linking well with Darcy O’Connor to whom slipped the ball into path of Dell from which he was quickly challenged  with the ball going for a corner, which was defended.

Stockport had a good opportunity mid-way through the half when their right sided player was afforded too easily the opportunity to deliver a quality cross, from which the advancing Stockport player connected well but his header was well wide and no trouble to Josh Harris in the Bacup goal.

Thirty six minutes on the clock and Bacup had doubled their lead, this came from a Bacup Corner that Anthony Hall delivered, once again Adrian Bellamy put himself in the mix, won the ball on his first touch, then quickly followed by a well-placed shot on his second touch steering the ball away from the Stockport keeper, much to the joys of the Bacup travelling faithful.

Whilst Bacup were always well in control of this game, never the less Stockport did get an ideal opportunity but the ball struck the post before Davison Banda cleared the ball away from danger.

Half time arrived and with this Bacup’s two goal cushion was well intact following an impressive first forty five minute.

The second half got underway, which from the off it did seem like Stockport Town were wanting to adopt a more direct approach, it was from these situations that Bacup did defend well, but with this looking a dominant threat going forward on the counter attack, the pace of Matthew Dell & Anthony Hall &, Matthew Bryan the reading of the game from Kelvin Trippier and Darcy O’Connor and the work ethics of Shane Birtles was proving too much for the home side,  first of all Anthony Hall saw his effort blocked by their keepers legs, Darcy O’Connor broke their high defencive line and really should have made it three for Bacup, then a long ball which was cleverly laid off by Anthony Hall for Matthew Dell who himself made an attempt to go around the Stockport Keeper, but their keeper got the slightest of touches enough to prevent Dell from scoring.

With the clock ticking down, Bacup’s two first half goals proved to be enough to take Bacup into Saturdays North West Counties League Play off final with Barnton FC 3pm .
