Match Report: Alsager Town Vs Bacup Borough

By Matthew Lawson

A very good Boro performance unfortunately ends in defeat at Alsager.

In what was a close encounter between Alsager Town and Bacup Borough chances were at a premium at Wood Park

The hosts had tested Boro ‘keeper Price early on, Bacup still on a high from their 2-1 victory at home to New Mills on Thursday night, showed plenty of energy. Matthew Bryan beat his marker for pace on the right hand side and played a well weighted pass in front of Josh Walne, but Alsager goal Keeper was quick off his line and rushed out to the feet of Walne to deny what could have been an early Bacup goal.

Just after the half hour mark Alsager took the lead, after Boro failed to clear, it took the Alsager forward two attempts to poke the ball home to open the scoring.

Bacup were still creating chances as the half went on and just like on Thursday night Anthony Hall was causing defenders heaps of trouble, after a run from wide Hall burst past two defenders and was pulled down by the Alsager full back, the resulting free kick was taken right footed by Josh Walne, his effort went just over.

Deep into first half added time, Alsager controversially doubled their lead, the goal came after what should have been a Bacup free kick in the defensive third was given in favour of the hosts resulting in confusion from both benches, never the less the free kick was played towards the back post where Oliver Jepson met the cross and made it 2-0 with a header.

With plenty to play for in the second half Peters men were fired up and were straight on the attack, Anthony Hall carrying on where he left off in the first half, causing havoc again, burst through the Alsager defence but saw his right footed effort saved by Conkie.

Going into the last 10 minutes Alsager put the game to bed through a cross come shot, Jordan Erdman will say he meant it but the cross floated over the head of Price in the Bacup goal.

Although Bacup were down 3-0, they still fought and created one last chance, substitute Benjamin Rhodes was played through by Elliot Collinson after good possession play in the middle of the park. The shot from Rhodes went agonisingly wide of the Alsager goal.

Full Time Alsager 3-0 Bacup

There are again plenty of positives for Brent Peters and his players to take from this defeat, Bacup will be on the road again in their cup tie against Preswich.
