Bootle Present New Year Test

Bacup Borough FC could not have chosen much tougher opposition than Bootle FC to open their 2013 fixtures with. The men from Merseyside arrive at the Brian Boys West View Stadium tomorrow (Saturday) for a 3pm kick-off. Bootle have lost just two of their 17 games played, winning 13 and drawing 2. Although in fourth position in the league table, they have at least 4 games in hand on all of the teams above them, including six in hand over current league leaders Maine Road. So, as things stand it could be argued that they look the current title favourites. One of those two defeats was an unexpected reverse in their last fixture at neighbours AFC Liverpool on Boxing Day. The other defeat was less surprising, against league leaders Maine Road. In the FA Cup with Budweiser Bootle had a famous 3-0 away win at current Evo Stik North leaders Mossley, before narrowly losing out to Bamber Bridge. In the FA Carlsberg Vase they were forced to concede home advantage to Thackley after a series of postponements and lost 3-1 in Yorkshire.

In our previous meeting in November goals from Thomas Foley and Jamie Hay saw Bootle win 2-0 at the Delta Taxis Stadium in what was a far more even encounter than the scoreline suggests. Graham McKeown made his debut in the game and came closest to scoring for the Boro.

Manager Brent Peters has Luke Morgan once again waiting to make his debut after signing from Salford City, whilst he is still hopeful of completing another signing ahead of the game. Haydn Paul continues his frustrating wait to complete the final match of his three game suspension. Lee Oldham will have a final fitness check to see if he is ready to return for contention in the squad.

We are hoping for a decent crowd to watch what should be an interesting encounter but as ever if you are out of town and want to keep in touch with the action be sure to follow us on twitter @bacupborough or @bacupboro for score updates.
