Just 24 hours after their hard fought win over Stone Dominoes, Borough were back in action again against Norton. Once again there were plenty of changes to personnel with John Ogden, Paul Nelson, Nathan Finnegan, Karl Stanley, David Gray and Paul Arrowsmith returning to the starting line-up, with Robel Kibrear earning his first start and Sam Hibbert his debut. Only Shane Birtles, Matthew Hampson and Adam Turner remained from the side that started last night.
Bacup started in a surprisingly lively fashion and in the third minute Gray’s shot on the turn produced a fine save from Christopher Dutton. Karl Stanley came agonisingly close to opening the scoring on 21 minutes when his driven ball went narrowly wide across the face of goal. Moments later Arrowsmith drove over before Norton took a 27th minute lead, Jonathan Beaumont scrambling the ball home. Stanley had another effort off target before Arrowsmith’s sweetly struck 36th minute free-kick drew a superb save from Dutton at his near post. However Arrowsmith was not to be denied his first goal for the club and a minute later, after superb acrobatics from Hibbert to set him up, he powered home the equaliser. Boro were now well on top and just moments later a good run from Gray ended with him firing wide across goal. HALF-TIME: Bacup Borough 1 Norton United 1
Two minutes after the restart Daniel Cocks was introduced after the hard working Hibbert picked up an injury. Bacup almost took the lead in the 53rd minute when Gray’s effort deflected off Dutton before being cleared off the line. Just two minutes later Cocks charged down Dutton’s attempted clearance and then kept his cool to round the keeper and calmly slot the ball into the net. Ogden produced a fine one handed save to keep Borough ahead after 59 minutes but was powerless to prevent Joe Donaldson bundling home an 80th minute leveller, although there was a question mark over whether the whole of the ball had crossed the line. All in all, though, Borough have to be happy with a point in their crazy schedule and can content themselves that they are currently 7th in the ‘current form’ table produced by the league. Now its on the road again tomorrow night (Friday) with a trip to face AFC Liverpool. FULL-TIME: Bacup Borough 2 Norton United 2
