Borough leave the Brian Boys West View Stadium disappointed once again after narrowly losing to local rivals Barnoldswick Town 2-0.

Borough named an unchanged team to the side that somehow lost to Wigan Robin Park last week.

The start to the game was a big battle for possession with no team getting a real foothold in the game. It took eight minutes for the first real attempt on goal and it was a free-kick from Town’s Mark Threlfall which was deflected and well saved by goalkeeper Gotham.

It was a very even start and just a minute later Borough went up the other end with Bryan coming inside skipping past two bodies, slots in birthday boy Marcus Calvert who didn’t connect sweetly and the ball bobbled wide.

The game was all being played in the midfield area whilst trying to get in behind as both teams were sporting a very high defensive line.

As the half went on the home side started to make their presence felt as they tend to do at home without that end product however. A speculative effort from Thompson and another half chance from Calvert were spurned.

BARB still pressing for that key first goal and the away goal keeper was looking shaky with his kicking all night and just past the half hour mark he scuffs one again right to Simon Thompson who simply rushed his volley wayward when in fact he could have taken his time and ran goal wards.

They were creating half opportunities but when faced in front of goal the contact wasn’t clean and were never threatening which is a great shame.

Right on the half-time whistle Bacup produce some lovely pass and move work which leads to a cross finding Calvert again but was just too far out and therefore couldn’t generate enough power in his header to give the keeper problems.

Half-Time: BARB 0-0 Barnoldswick Town

When Wigan Robin Park came out firing after the break last week I thought that this may happen again however the home side came back and continued from where they left off pressing and pushing for that goal. However there was no clear cut chances being created and therefore couldn’t see the goal coming.

In the 64th minute they were then made to pay as Sam Howell raced through and blasted into the roof of the net. The Borough defence were absolutely livid however as they seemed certain the onrushing midfielder was in an offside position.

BARB needed a plan B to just try and sniff a goal out and manager Brent Peters made a double change bringing on big Russian Artjoms Butorins and Paul Socha. However this didn’t change a great deal as Barnoldswick doubled their lead in the 78th minute as Bill Williams bent his free-kick low into the keeper’s near side.

The chances for the home side were limited and a Matty Bryan free-kick easily saved was all I can tell you about. On the other hand town almost made it three as Howell again just pushed it wide as BARB were going all out.

Full-Time: BARB 0-2 Barnoldswick Town

The Borough didn’t play badly again but it doesn’t take a genius to work out that we are lacking goals and goals win games. Simple as that.
