Borough Wrap It Up With A Draw

BACUP BOROUGH 0  ST. HELENS TOWN 0

Bacup made it just 2 defeats from their final 12 matches as their mammoth 2012/13 season campaign finally drew to a close at a sun kissed West View Stadium yesterday afternoon. The attraction of a bouncy castle, plus the chance to take 5 penalty kicks at Borough boss Brent Peters after the game, helped swell the gate to three figures for only the third time this season and played right into the hands of those calling for Summer football. On the pitch Mark Clapham finally made his home debut in goal, whilst there were recalls to the side for Paul Nelson, Jon Stephenson and Ben Shedwick.

Unlike most of the games during the infamous run-in, this one really had an ‘end of season’ feel, played in a relaxed atmosphere in the hot weather. In the early stages Shedwick headed narrowly over, whilst Lee Oldham saw his header held by Ryan Taylor. Daniel Cocks fired wide on 21 minutes whilst for the visitors Michael Sykes-Wright saw his crisp effort well held by Clapham in what was to prove their only on target shot of the match. The last chance of the half saw Matty Bryan’s dangerous whipped in cross headed to safety for a corner. HALF-TIME: Bacup Borough 0 St. Helens Town 0

Artjoms Butorins joined the action for Shedwick at the interval but within three minutes of his arrival he collected a booking for a late challenge. Bryan sent in another superb cross on 50 minutes, this time headed wide by Oldham. On 62 minutes Oldham and Shane Birtles linked up well before the latter fired over. It was this pair that were having most of the goal chances, Oldham heading over again on 65 and Birtles firing wide after a good run two minutes later. With 20 minutes to go Stephenson produced the best save of the match from Taylor after cutting in from the right and unleashing a strong effort at goal. The only other action of note was the booking of substitute Paul Arrowsmith for what was deemed as a two footed challenge, although he won the ball cleanly. The game ended with both sides receiving a warm round of applause from their respective supporters and with most of the crowd staying back for over an hour afterwards for the penalty kicks competition it was a very pleasant end to what has been a tough season for the club.
