Borough’s 4 Star Display Sinks Linnets

Bacup carried on from where they had left off at Squires Gate on Tuesday night, with a convincing display that Borough boss Brent Peters hailed as their best so far this season. Fielding an unchanged line up from Tuesday’s win on the Fylde close, it was leading scorer and team captain Daniel Cocks that gave Bacup the lead on 20 minutes. He had earlier struck the post from a free-kick but after a slip from Paul Bowes let him in for a one on one with the keeper, he made no mistake in notching his eighth of the season.

It got better for Borough nine minutes later when Boic Nhlizyo got the goal his recent performances have deserved, lifting the ball over Dave Moran after the Runcorn defence failed to deal with another free-kick. HALF-TIME: Bacup Borough 2 Runcorn Linnets 0

Any thoughts that Bacup would sit back on their lead after the restart were quickly put to bed as they added a third in the 54th minute. A break down the right from Cocks saw him cross to the far post where Haydn Paul was waiting to convert. Before Runcorn had time to recover they conceded a fourth just four minutes later. This time the break was down the left and once again Cocks was the provider, setting up Paul for an effort that Moran did well to save but only succeeded in hitting the ball off Aaron Kirk and into the net. The Linnets looked to have found a way back into the game on 64 minutes when Ryan Jones took down Ross McDowell and the referee pointed to the spot. However, Jones redeemed himself by keeping out Sean Pearsons penalty and then clearing as he attempted to force home the rebound. They did finally find the net in injury time when Tom Turner found the net with a goal that looked to have a suspicion of offside.

All in all a great day at the office for a rapidly improving Bacup team that have now won 4 out of 5 and were watched by their first three figure attendance of the season.
