Bacup and Rossendale Borough once again narrowly lost out by a 1-2 score line, this time to local rivals Colne.
Manager Brent Peters made four changes going into the midweek fixture welcoming back Barry Massey and handing three debuts to Kieron O’Boyle, Louis Price and a second debut for Jon Stephenson.
After an early shot on target for Colne’s Jason Hart the game was a slow starter but in the 14th minute Chris Anderson unleashed a bullet from 25 yards which flew straight in.
The first real chance for the home side came just after the half hour mark with some good strong hold up play by Massey who diverted it into the path of the onrushing Matty Bryan who broke and picked out Ryan Humphries in space who then rushed his shot which bobbled first and went wayward.
However when you are down the bottom of the league you never get that bit of luck and it was just a dagger to the hearts that just a minute later Andrew Tinker’s shot took a huge wicked deflected which of course rocketed into the top corner.
Things then nearly went from bad to worse as Shane Birtles’ clearance didn’t travel far enough and Tinker again got played clean through but the debutant keeper O’Boyle came out and clamed well.
BARB were struggling to create anything at this point which was obviously a massive worry and the second half had to improve to stand within a chance.
Half-Time: BARB 0-2 Colne
Into the second half and changes had to be made and they were as Paul Socha and Lee Bancroft came on for Jon Stephenson and Louis Price. The pressing was more intense in this half which usually brings good things and eight minutes into the half we finally got a break. Lee Oldham was clearly pushed inside the area which gave the referee no choice but to point to the spot. Matty Bryan stepped up to take it but he got under it too much and it struck the crossbar. However the ball stayed in and went up in the air in which Massey flicked it down to which Bryan dispatched emphatically to make up for the penalty miss.
It was a much more exciting and faster past half and Colne nearly netted against straight after as Tinker shot narrowly wide.
The Bacup goalkeeper was then called upon again as he pulls off a super save down low to keep them in the game.
Chances were coming thick and fast as time runs out as Bryan puts in a delicious cross with his weak foot which finds Adrian Bellamy with a free header but it falls straight into the keeper’s arms.
At this point the game was completely on edge as it could go either way with both teams were pushing for that crucial next goal.
Adrian Bellamy then finds himself with another great chance to level it up as Wager smashes over the top which Bellamy controls perfectly but again the flicked shot is just too weak to cause any problems.
Unfortunately for Bacup time again ran out and they couldn’t nick anything.
