A Martin Cosgrave red card proves pivotal as a battling Brent Peters side shows improvement and pushes the league leaders till the end.

In a game that saw the league leaders silsden pushed right to the end by a injury hit Brent Peters side is something to build on in the upcoming fixtures for Bacup Borough.
Bacup without Davison Banda, James Constantine, Joshua Walne, Elliot Collinson and Rico Stewart all absent through injury, Peters shuffled his pack and called upon Marcus Barlow, Sam Howe, Martin Cosgrave and Alistair White for the away trip to Silsden.

Borough started the first half full of energy and got stuck in from the off, although the hosts had the better of the opening chances the Bacup back line stood strong. A superb double save from Nick Sharples kept the scores level early on.
Just after the midway point of the first half, Silsden were reduced to 10 men following an off the ball incident leaving Nathan Tayo on the floor after conceding a free kick midway inside his own half.
Following the sending off Bacup played some good football and looked to be causing silsden problems, this until the referee pointed to the spot on the half hour mark after Joe Carrol was judged to of fouled Silsden’s Sultan inside the Box. Sharples managed to get something on the penalty taken by Wademan but the ball ricocheted off him, hit the post and trickled into the net.

Having gone 1-0 down Bacup pressed on and started to take advantage of having an extra man as Martin Cosgrave beat 3 Silsden players down the left hand side, he then picked out Wayne Morrison who unselfishly played the ball back to Jordan Wilmore whose goal bound shot was tipped over by the silsden goalkeeper following a deflection. The resulting corner was fired in from the right hand side by Matthew Bryan, the keepers punch was tame and it fell to Marcus Barlow who lashed the ball past the goalkeeper and the 2 defenders on the line to equalise for Borough and make it 1-1 going into half time.

10 minutes into the second half and Bacup’s Martin Cosgrave was given his marching orders from the referee following a second bookable offence. With Both teams now down to 10 men, the hosts piled on the pressure but were restricted to long range shots and the Bacup rear guard stayed strong as Tayo and Carrol made vital blocks to stop goal bound efforts from the Silsden front men. As the second half drew to a close, ‘keeper Nick Sharples produced an unbelievable save at his near post from point blank range to keep the score at 1-1.

As we entered the last 5 minutes of the game, after a performance worthy of a point Borough hearts were broken as Silsden snatched all 3 points, Sultan found space in the area and tucked a low right footed shot past Sharples.

Bacup heads didn’t drop and they carried on right to the final whistle. They gave their all against the league leaders and were unlucky not to get the point that the performance deserved.

Borough are on the road again on Saturday as they travel to Whitchurch Alport.
