Bacup Borough travel to face St. Helens Town on Boxing Day (Wednesday 3pm) for a vital North West Counties League Premier Division clash. With a dispute still preventing the Saints from taking up their agreed groundshare with St. Helens Rugby League team, the game goes ahead at Edge Green Street, home of Ashton Town FC. St. Helens currently lie ‘below the line’ in 21st place in the league table and are in danger of swapping places with their landlords at the end of the season. They have won 3 and drawn 4 of their 17 league games. However, with two games in hand over Bacup the Saints could draw level with us if they win them, making the game a real ‘six pointer’. There have been signs of improvement lately for the Saints with narrow 2-1 away defeats at Maine Road and Stockport Sports in their last two matches, with the winner at league leaders Maine Road only arriving late into injury time. As well as being a great chance to get out of the house for a few hours after 2 days spent with relatives, another good reason to travel is to get a copy of the Saints award winning matchday programme. It was voted the 8th best in the whole country last season!!
Manager Brent Peters has a few selection decisions to make, including whether to bring in recent signing Luke Morgan into the squad. There is an injury doubt over Kinglsey Williams, whilst Haydn Paul remains unavailable as the cancellation of the Stockport Sports game meant he was unable to complete the last match of his three match ban. Ryan Jones and Steve Maden were both sick at the weekend and Peters must wait to see if they also recover. With the exception of Bootle and Maine Road in January, this match heralds the start of a set of seven fixtures against teams in the bottom half of the table and Borough must be looking to now go on a run that will pull themselves clear to a comfortable position in the league.
