Bacup Borough Manager Brent Peters has announced that Shane Birtles will captain the club from the 2015/16 season.
Birtles, a former Huddersfield Town youngster, has been with the club since 2012. Having swept the board at the end of season awards that year Birtles is held in high regard amongst playing staff and management. After suffering a broken leg during the 2013/14 campaign which kept him out until well into last season the player will be hoping he can bounce back strongly and lead the club in their promotion charge.
Alongside his playing career Shane also works with the PFA as a Project Administrator.
Manager Brent Peters had this to say “It is with great pleasure to be able to make Shane the Captain and equally it is with grateful thanks that Shane accepted this position and all the responsibility that goes with it. Since Shane joined the club at the start of the 2012/13 football season he has proved not only to be a valuable player for the team but he is well respected by all of the supporters, the club staff and his fellow players, this was recognised when at the conclusion of that season Shane did go onto win all of the main awards, Supporters player of the year, Players Player of the year and The Managers Player of the year.”
Peters went onto say “Making a player the captain is not about just giving someone a title, I have always thought very carefully to whom I offer this prestigious position and I am honoured to have had some excellent creditable captains throughout my managerial time and Shane has all of the attributes to be right up there with the best of them. Shane is very Professional with all aspects of his football, the boy trains well, is punctual, has an excellent discipline record and what is more his fellow players all respect him.
“There could not be anyone more fitting than Shane to lead this club on at an historic time of reverting back to Bacup Borough Football Club and the fact we have for the first time introduced U15 and U17 teams along with the introduction of a Football Academy. Shane is the perfect example for any of these young players in their football progression. I wish Shane luck and every success in his role and for the season ahead.”
